so are points going to the driver or the boat number? I see that Greg got no points for Saturday but Emilio did. Didn't Greg drive Emilio's boat on Saturday"

007's picture

I think that is a mistake... Maybe the scorer did not record that Greg was actually driving for Emilio. I will have to call and see if we can have that corrected.

flying finn's picture

Thanks 45 for looking out for me. I did talk to Jeanie at the race, scratched my boat for Saturday and added myself as a driver under Emilio's registration. All done the proper way. Will appreciate the correction. Have a happy holiday to all the COR boys (and girls).

STV_Keith's picture

Also looks like they incorrectly scored the Saturday race as well. According to our rules:

APBA RULE 13 - Start and finish:
5. The number of boats crossing the starting line before the lead boat has completed the first lap during the first heat of a race shall determine the number of boats starting the race.

Since the #343, #234, #30 and #9 all crossed the starting line, then the race was red flagged and re-run, the number of boats that started the first heat race of the day was 4 as mandated in our rules. The restarted race results should be:

#234 - 400
#9 - 300
#343 - 225
#30 - DNF

The officials ruled the first heat a no heat. And if they did not, they would not have allowed the 234 to run again in the same heat since it was involved in the accident. I spoke with Ross and this is what he told me. I rushed home to get my Baker to make 4 boats but no one in the class held the heat. Ross said he would be happy to hold the heat if he had known. I was on the phone with a COR driver but no one told him I was on the way. At the end of the day, we put in our best effort... not a great weekend.

10. (COR racing rules 2014)
The Referee shall have the power to annul any start and request a restart.
In the event a restart is caused by a boat(s), the Referee shall determine if those boat(s) will be allowed to run.
As far as i can read there is no such thing as a "no heat." I assume Doug annuled the first heat, and restarted it. He also had the power to determine who caused the restart and either allow or disallow the boat which caused the race stoppage to run in the restart. By letting the 234 boat in the restart I would have to assume the the race restart was caused by the 30 boat, and logically, even if he managed to get another boat to race, would not have been allowed to enter the restart. This happened to me last year in the Spring Classic, when JJ and Keith came together. Even though the 234 was able to continue, Keith was not allowed to enter the restart because "it was unclear who caused the crash."
If we continue to conjecture, had the second heat been run with only three boats, neither heat would have counted for APBA points. Probably "crying over spilt milk" but I have yet another scenario to propose: suppose we have another 4 boat race and a racer gets wrapped around the axle about something and withdraws his entry, now you have situation where one disgruntled racer can control the scoring for a day for three other racers who invested their time and money to be there, what a shame! I think this rule should be interpreted differently, barring that it should be revised.

007's picture

I also noticed how (I believe) the APBA Scores score... They fill in time sheets that are blank until a boat completes the first lap.

Capnzee88's picture

I believe that the following is APBA's interpretation of the 4 boat rule for points: Four boats are required to start the first heat if points are to be awarded. After that time, the race has been set. If one or even two boats fail to finish the heat and/or cannot start the next heat, the race continues to the next heat with the boats remaining, even if there is only one or two boats at the starting line. Eg. If there is only ONE legal boat able to start the second heat he/she will be scored providing he/she makes a legal start. The referee then has the option of giving the one legal boat a checkered flag after one lap and scoring that boat as the winner of the heat or requiring that same boat to run all of the laps as per the sanction. This is standard procedure when running heat races when two or more heats make up a race. The same holds true in a re-start situation. Rod

flying finn's picture

Thank you Rod! The 5 racers that made that event spent alot of money and time to be there. Most important, many of us suffered, in the fact we did not spent time with the "family" at home. Rod explained it perfectly. The points will be counted for the third race. You can interpret the rules all you want. Fair is fair. We have had many races with only three boats remaining for the last race where as we had at least 7 start. APBA will adjust their scoring system to accomodate us. If it costs a reprograming fee (I doubt it) I will gladly pay it. And if you want to hear the real story about the phone call to a COR driver as referenced by Mike's post 12-23-13, feel free to call me 310 490-6854. I am the COR guy and by the way, there where two calls and I did talk to Ross. Finally, we had Emilio get hurt thrown inside his boat, again we had a accident that nobody got hurt, got lucky and we got back out there and finished a race. And someone doesn't want us to have points?

007's picture

In the 2014 rule book... 3. Race day decisions within the purview of the Race Officials are made by the Race Officials.

The officials waved off the first heat in question. Call Ross or Jeannie for the official ruling on the day.

Drivers, class officials, the COR Chairman, nor the class founder make these decisions. The APBA trains and certifies our race officials including the scorers and referees to make these calls.

Like all competitive sports, sometimes the participants don't agree with the officials.

Propman's picture

It might be time for this matter to be taken off the public forum. Emails or phone calls might be more appropriate.
Just my humble opinion.

Propman's picture

This week APBA awarded points for racers who competed on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. They ruled that in first heat there were 4 bonafied starters and as such the race counted for national points. You may view the high points in APBA's website under events/ high points
